Named as one of the 52 places in the world to visit in 2018 by New York Times, Glasgow is a fantastic place to explore and is rich in culture and history. As a company based in Glasgow, we know there is plenty to see and do, whether strolling the streets or exploring visual interiors. Famed for its distinct Victorian and art nouveau architecture, the city also features a number of unique buildings and locations. Whether built from concrete, marble or metal, these are our top picks for exploring some extraordinary buildings and architecture throughout the city.
This award-winning transport museum is an impressive structure, designed by Dame Zaha Hadid, and is an architectural portrayal of Glasgow’s industrial and shipbuilding history. The modern, jagged and angled metal and glass building is reminiscent of a monitored heartbeat and creates dancing rays when the sunlight hits it. A wonderful day out for all ages, this museum is free to visit with over 3,000 objects and multiple interactive displays.
Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum
A handsome and imposing building inside and out, Kelvingrove stands out as one of the top visitor attractions in Glasgow. Voted the number one art museum in the UK on Trip Advisor, the museum certainly engages all that explore the exterior and wander the interior. As an art gallery and natural history museum, it boasts of one of Europe’s largest art collections and its architecture is certainly a worthy photo opportunity.
Also commonly known as the SEC Armadillo, due to its armadillo-like characteristics, this venue is a multi-activity centre that sits next to the River Clyde. But its structure is actually representing a ship’s hulls as a nod to Glasgow’s shipbuilding heritage. Whether an armadillo or hulls, many say the building also looks like ship’s sails or the Sydney Opera House. Either way, it joins the list as one of Glasgow’s unique buildings.
Found in the heart of Glasgow, just off Style Mile, The Lighthouse was the first commission completed by famed Glaswegian pioneering architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Also, an attraction that’s free to enter, today the building is home to a number of artists and design work and is open daily for all to visit. You’ll definitely want to explore it’s interior as it boasts stunning views of the city from the top and features one of Glasgow’s most Instagrammed locations - the spiral staircase.
There’s still plenty more to see in Glasgow. Why not take a trip to Glasgow Green and visit the grand People’s Palace and Winter Gardens? It’s magical fountains, sculptures and dome roof will captivate all that visit. Or, wander along George Street to the Glasgow City Chambers. Reminiscent of the Vatican, this powerful marble building has been previously used as a movie stand-in to the Vatican’s St Peter’s Basilica.
