Construction waste

When carrying out a construction project, it is important that you try to recycle and reuse building waste where possible. Not only does recycling construction waste save you money by reducing building costs, but it also ensures that your project is sustainable and environmentally friendly. Read on for our top tips for recycling construction waste.

Build to standard dimensions

If you’re constructing a new building, you may find that your project is flexible enough to build to standard dimensions and therefore you can purchase supplies and materials in the standard measurements that they come in. The less that you have to cut and adapt, the less wastage you will produce - and the less effort it will take!

Prepare for waste before you start building

To ensure that your project is as sustainable and efficient as possible, it’s important that you prepare for waste disposal in advance. Your project is going to produce waste, and it’s important that you plan for its collection and recycling in advance to ensure that it is disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. We also recommend choosing a local construction clearance or recycling company to dispose of your waste. This reduces the amount of time, effort and petrol used in the process.

Practice deconstruction instead of demolition

Rather than bulldozing an old building, practice deconstruction instead. Building demolition results in both waste generation and heavy pollution, whereas deconstruction allows for recovery of usable material. When you practice deconstruction instead of demolition, you may find that you can reuse materials and repurpose them into your new building, producing less waste.

Collect and store waste separately

When working on a construction project, sort out different types of waste into different piles. This will make the removal and disposal process much easier and lower your costs for waste disposal too. Make sure that your construction waste is sorted by type and material - and always keep recyclables in a separate pile to ensure that they can easily be picked up and recycled.
