Should You Use Recycled Aggregates for Your Next Project?

Aggregates

When it comes time to source construction materials, many firms are now more interested than ever in the environmental side of things. They may boast green credentials where they are trying to reduce waste and re-use more, or they might be working for a client who is particularly interested in keeping things sustainable. Whatever the reason, using products such as gravel made from recycled materials can have many advantages, so here are some things to think about.

As good as new

Recycled aggregates may be inexpensive, but you don’t compromise on quality when you use them. They are the same grade and quality as new products from a quarry, so you don’t have to worry about using them for your important projects. Some things that recycled aggregates might be used for include:

·        Road construction

·        Bulk fills

·        Noise barriers

·        Fill for drainage

However, most of the time they’re simply used in place of new aggregates, so no special knowledge or methods are required.

Avoid landfill

With many new construction projects popping up across the UK, older buildings are often being demolished, especially those which have the rather 70s look that has fallen out of favour. This can mean a lot of leftover materials such as concrete, which if not recycled would go to landfill. However, using specialist recycling equipment, these old materials can be crushed then screened to remove dust and debris, turning them into useable aggregate.

Use in concrete

Around a third of the market for aggregates comes from concrete, and with millions of tonnes used each year, that’s potentially a big impact on the environment. Using stone and other materials that have been recycled could therefore save large amounts of money and reduce the carbon footprint on the Earth. Although only about 17% of aggregates currently come from recycled sources, the number is on the rise, and if recycled products are more easily available then they are more likely to be used.

Best price

One of the main advantages of recycled aggregates is perhaps the price. Everyone who works in construction knows that the budget is one of the main constraints, and that means you will often want to make cuts wherever you can, without compromising on quality. For many projects, it makes sense to use cheaper, recycled aggregates that can be used exactly as normal.

Quality control

If you decide to opt for recycled aggregates, then quality control is key. You should use experts who’ll sort and grade the materials properly, ensuring the highest quality product. When recycling, it’s important that the materials at the end of it conform to quality standards, so you can feel confident when using them for the best result. Reputation is important in the construction industry, so it’s important to use the best possible materials.
